Enterprise Edition Troubleshooting

How does it work?

Inspice Trace, a hidden program residing in your computer or device, determines the location of your computer (or device) and sends the location information to your email address in privacy-safe and fault-tolerant manner. This allows quick recovery of your stolen or lost computer (or device).

Inspice Trace determines location of the computer or device by analyzing network configuration information of the computer or for the device. The network configuration information includes Internet IP addresses and hostnames.
Inspice Trace uses unique privacy safe tracking technology, which determines the location of the computer (or device) without using any monitoring servers (or monitoring systems) and without using any other tracking servers to protect your privacy. For more info, see Privacy-safe tracking.

In addition, it lets you remotely destroy sensitive data in your stolen/lost computer (or device) to protect the data. The data destruction method complies with the US Department of Defense clearing and sanitizing standard to ensure that data is thoroughly and unrecoverably destroyed. This data protection feature is available only to Inspice Trace Enterprise edition.

What if stolen laptop's hard drive is formatted?

When Inspire Trace is properly installed, unauthorized individuals can neither uninstall the software nor reformat the hard drive. These actions require the original installation program and the authorization code. To view the install/uninstall instructions, run Setup and click Help.

Can anyone tell if Inspice Trace is protecting my computer?

Other people won't be able to tell whether Inspice Trace is running on your computer unless you choose to tell them. There are no icons, files, directories, sounds, or anything else that would be visible on your computer.

Can Inspice Trace locate a stolen laptop without the software?

No. Inspice Trace must be installed in a laptop in order to locate the laptop.

How will Trace affect my computer?

Inspice Trace won't affect your computer. You won't notice any difference after installing the tiny program. Your computer will run just as it had prior to the installation. However, in terms of protection, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your computer is fully protected by Trace's laptop location tracking and remote data destruction features.

What if my stolen computer is switched off?

As soon as the laptop is on, tracing will resume.

What is your return policy?

We offer a 30 day money back guarantee on all our software products if you are dissatisfied for any reason.

How does Trace remotely destroy confidential data?

When you authorize remote data destruction by pressing the delete button on the Inspice website, a remote program sends a delete command via the Internet to the Inspice Trace program residing in your stolen or lost computer. The program will securely and irrevocably destroy the data in the stolen or lost computer. This will protect your sensitive data from any potential unauthorized access.
Note:Trace's data erase service is available at the Secure Data Erase page on the Inspice website. The delete button won't be visible unless your computer has been reported as being lost or stolen.

What data will be destroyed?

The Trace remote data destruction feature uses a secure technology to destroy all files and subfolders under the computer's My Documents and Settings folders. The remote data destruction is fully compliant with the US Department of Defense clearing and sanitizing standard DOD 5220.22-M. These folders contain all user data, which includes but is not limited to data files, cookies, Internet history, logon information, cache, emails, and other user data. Once the data is destroyed, it is not recoverable. The operating system, system files and programs will not be destroyed.
Trace's laptop location tracking capability won't be affected by the remote data destruction and emails with the laptop's precise location will continue to be sent to the owner's registered email address.
When a Trace remote data destruction command is executed on a USB flash drive, all of the files on the removable drive are destroyed.

Glossary

IP Address: a unique numeric address of a device connected to the Internet. An IP address is also called an external IP address (or public IP address) and is routable. Some addresses are reserved for internal use only in local area networks. For example, from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 are reserved for internal use only (in IP version 4). These addresses are called internal IP addresses (or private IP addresses) and are non-routable. Usually the term "IP address" refers to an external IP address unless specifically stated otherwise. The IP address and the tracking time can be used to identify a street address and thereby locate your missing computer.
